How this calculator works

For every holding, yearly income = amount invested × dividend yield. The calculator adds them up, divides by 12 for the monthly figure, and works out your average (weighted) yield by dividing total income by total money invested.

Example: $100,000 at a 3% yield pays $3,000 a year. $50,000 at 6% pays another $3,000. Together that is $150,000 earning $6,000, an average yield of 4%, or $500 a month.

Can dividends replace a salary?

Divide the monthly spending you want to cover by your monthly dividend income. If the result is 100% or more, the portfolio would cover that spending in this simple model. If it is lower, the gap tells you how much more capital or yield you would need. At a 4% average yield, every $1,000 of monthly income needs about $300,000 invested.

What this simple model leaves out

  • Taxes and fees. Dividends are usually taxed, and some countries also withhold tax on foreign dividends. Use the optional field to see a rough after-tax figure.
  • Dividend cuts. Companies can reduce or cancel dividends. A high yield can be a warning sign, not a bonus.
  • Inflation. The money you need in 20 years will be more than you need today.
  • Concentration. A few holdings in one sector can all be hit at the same time.
  • Price changes. The calculator assumes the amount invested stays the same and the yield does not change.
