1
Regulation and investor protection
A broker should be authorised by a financial regulator that covers you. Look at how client assets are held and what compensation scheme applies if the broker fails.
Ask: Which regulator supervises this broker for my country, and what does the compensation scheme cover and up to what limit?
2
All-in costs
Commission is only one part. Currency conversion, custody, inactivity, deposit and withdrawal fees can matter more than the trading fee for a long-term investor.
Ask: What would I pay in a normal year, given how often I buy and in which currency?
3
Markets and instruments
Check that you can buy the exchanges, stocks and ETFs you want, and whether fractional shares are available for small, regular purchases.
Ask: Can I buy the exact funds or companies I plan to hold, in my currency?
4
How dividends are handled
Look at how fast cash dividends arrive, whether automatic reinvestment (DRIP) is available, and whether it works with fractional shares.
Ask: Are dividends paid in cash promptly, and can I reinvest them automatically at no extra cost?
5
Taxes and paperwork
Foreign dividends can face withholding tax, and you may need forms to claim a lower treaty rate. Good brokers give clear annual tax statements.
Ask: Does the broker help with withholding-tax forms and give a year-end report I can use for my own tax filing?
6
Currencies and deposits
See which currencies the account holds, what exchange rate you get, and which deposit and withdrawal methods are free, fast and allowed.
Ask: What rate and fee do I pay when I convert money, and how long does a withdrawal take?
7
Platform and tools
Dividend history, income reports, alerts and the option to export your data make long-term tracking much easier.
Ask: Can I see my dividend income by month and export my transactions?
8
Account types
Depending on where you live, there may be tax-advantaged accounts for investing. Check which account types the broker offers.
Ask: Which account types are available to me, and which is best suited to long-term income?
9
Support and reputation
Look at support hours and languages, the complaints process, and any warnings published by the regulator. Be cautious about reviews that look sponsored.
Ask: How do I escalate a problem, and has the regulator published any warnings about this firm?
10
Account security
Two-factor authentication, login alerts and withdrawal controls protect you from account takeover.
Ask: What security features can I switch on, and how are suspicious withdrawals handled?
