How this calculator works

It starts with the dividends the company or fund paid over the last 12 months and the current share price. Each month it adds your contribution, pays the dividend (a twelfth of the yearly amount, per share) and, if you chose to reinvest, buys more shares with it. Every year the dividend per share grows by the rate you set, and the price grows by its own rate.

The two growth rates start from sensible defaults: the dividend growth is the company's 5-year history (capped at 8% so one great stretch does not set unrealistic expectations) and the price growth is a flat 4%. Both are only starting points. Past growth does not guarantee future growth, and dividends can be cut or stopped at any time.

What it leaves out

  • Taxes, trading fees and fund expenses, which reduce what you actually keep.
  • Currency changes: everything here is in US dollars.
  • Special one-off dividends. Growth is measured on the regular, typical payment.
  • Real payment dates. We spread each year's dividend evenly across the months.
