What ITOT actually is

ITOT is a total-market ETF. Instead of just the 500 largest companies, it holds thousands of US stocks of all sizes, weighted by company value. It is a one-fund way to own the US economy.

What is inside

The largest companies make up most of the fund, so it behaves much like the S&P 500. Mid-size and small companies add a small but real extra layer of diversification.

Distributions

It collects the dividends of its holdings and pays them out quarterly. The yield is similar to the broad market’s, which is lower than that of dividend-focused funds, because many of the biggest companies pay little or nothing.

What to keep in mind

  • Concentration at the top. A few huge companies drive much of the return.
  • Low income. It is a growth-and-core fund, not an income fund.
  • Overlap. It holds most of what an S&P 500 fund holds.

Quick take

ITOT is a simple core holding for the whole US market. Compare it with VTI and VOO to see the differences.
