What JEPQ actually is
JEPQ is JPMorgan’s actively managed ETF that follows the same idea as JEPI but on the technology-heavy Nasdaq-100. It builds a portfolio of equity securities comprised significantly of those in the Nasdaq-100 Index, and through equity-linked notes sells call options with exposure to that benchmark. It is classed as non-diversified.
It launched in 2022 and trades on the Nasdaq.
How the income works
As with JEPI, the option premiums produce extra income, paid out on top of dividends, while the upside in strong rallies is capped. Because the Nasdaq-100 is more volatile than the S&P 500, option premiums are typically larger, which is why payouts tend to be higher than for JEPI.
Distributions
The fund typically pays monthly, but the amount changes with market conditions. Part of the payout is not made up of company dividends and may be taxed differently. Check the fund’s current yield, fees and distribution schedule on the issuer’s website, because they change.
What to keep in mind
- Tech concentration. A few large technology companies dominate.
- Variable income. The payout can drop when volatility falls.
- Capped upside. Strong rallies are only partly captured.
- A short track record. It began in 2022.
