What NextEra Energy actually does
NextEra Energy is an American energy company headquartered in Juno Beach, Florida. It has two main parts: Florida Power & Light (FPL), a regulated utility serving millions of Florida customers, and NextEra Energy Resources, a large developer and operator of wind, solar and battery projects across the US and Canada.
Wikipedia describes it as the world’s largest electric utility holding company by market capitalisation. The company began as FPL Group in 1984 and was renamed NextEra in 2009.
How the business makes money
FPL earns a regulated return on its investments, which gives steady, predictable earnings. NextEra Energy Resources earns money by building renewable plants and selling the electricity under long-term contracts, which is a faster-growing but more competitive business.
Both parts require a lot of capital, funded by debt and by selling shares, which is why borrowing costs matter.
The dividend story
NextEra pays a quarterly dividend and has raised it steadily for many years, with a growth plan that is more ambitious than most utilities. The yield is lower than that of a typical utility, because the share price reflects the growth.
That makes NextEra a hybrid between a stable utility and a growth company. Our guide on dividend growth vs high yield explains why a lower yield with faster growth can still be attractive.
What to keep an eye on
- Interest rates. Heavy borrowing makes the business sensitive to financing costs.
- Florida regulation and hurricanes. Rate decisions and storm costs matter.
- Renewable policy. Tax credits and rules affect project returns.
- Valuation. Growth expectations are built into the share price.
Quick take
NextEra Energy combines a stable regulated utility with a fast-growing renewables arm. Its dividend yield is modest, but its growth ambitions are higher than those of most utilities.
